Pennsylvania's First Lady, Susan Corbett, has been a longtime supporter of domestic violence issues. With help from her husband, Governor Tom Corbett, she helped a local organization called SafeNet benefit from a $30,000 grant.
Mrs. Corbett traveled to the home of SafeNet's board president, Shirley Williams, to meet with committee and organization members, to further open a dialogue about the plight of victims facing domestic abuse.
"I applaud SafeNet, this organization, because their focus is not only on women who are being abused, and the occasional man who is abused because that happens as well, but really looking at children and services and support that they need if they're in a home that experiences domestic violence," the First Lady said. "We know that children who grow up in a home that experiences domestic violence, are more than likely going to be abusers themselves."
The $30, 000 grant will aid SafeNet's legal counseling unit, which represents women and their children in court when they are fighting to leave an abusive relationship.
SafeNet is Erie's only certified domestic violence agency, and has been in operation since 1974. They are celebrating their 40th anniversary with a Big Birthday Bash October 25th. For more information on seeking help for yourself or someone who you know may be a victim of domestic violence, visit www.safeneterie.com or drop in to their downtown location at 1702 French Street during regular business hours.
