MILLIONAIRE SECRETARY TOM WOLF SAYS PEOPLE LIKE HIM “SHOULD PAY MORE” IN TAXES, BUT HIS TAX RETURNS SHOW HE PAYS MUCH, MUCH LESS
HARRISBURG, PA – As the first installment in the “Millionaire Secretary Tom Wolf Hypocrisy Tour,” the Corbett-Cawley campaign today exposed the hypocrisy surrounding Secretary Tom Wolf’s income tax hike proposal. Wolf justifies the income tax proposal by saying wealthy Pennsylvanians should be paying more in taxes, but Wolf’s own tax returns show that on average, he pays a considerably lower tax rate than the average taxpayer.
“Secretary Tom Wolf is once again demonstrating that there should be lower taxes for him, and higher taxes for the rest of us,” stated Communications Director Chris Pack. “Before Secretary Tom Wolf was a candidate for governor and was just your run-of-the-mill business owner in the State of Delaware avoiding paying his fair share of Pennsylvania corporate taxes, he paid a drastically lower income tax rate than average Pennsylvania families. But as a candidate for Governor, he is now engaging in class warfare by suddenly calling for higher taxes on ‘people like me,’ which he defines as middle class families making more than $75,000. That is incredibly disingenuous and further demonstrates that Wolf is willing to say or do anything to get elected.”
In an Associated Press story from July where Wolf was trying to explain his income tax hike proposal that sorely lacks any details, he stated that “I think people like me should pay more.” However, the very limited tax return information released by the Wolf campaign shows that Wolf pays a drastically lower income tax rate than the average taxpayer.
For example, in 2010 Wolf’s tax summary shows a total tax rate of 7.3 percent. By comparison, according the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the average tax rate for all taxpayers for the same year was 18.1 percent.
During the Democratic primary, Wolf showed (to any reporter willing to drive to his campaign office in York) three complete years of tax returns for 2010, 2011 and 2012. For those three years, Wolf paid a tax rate of 7.3 percent, 7 percent and 11.8 percent, respectively.
