A spokesman says Governor Corbett will sign a pair of bills headed to his desk that will encourage Pennsylvania schools to address genocide education and suicide prevention.

The state House gave final approval to both bills Monday. One measure will provide model curriculum guidelines and teacher training for genocide and Holocaust education. If, after two years of implementation, less than 90-percent of Pennsylvania public schools are offering that education, it will be mandated.

Philadelphia Democrat Brendan Boyle is a major supporter of the House legislation, “This piece of legislation does not represent 100-percent of what I wanted and what some advocates wanted. But it represents literally 90-percent of it. I believe that is an honorable compromise.”

The House also sent the governor a bill that will have schools develop a youth suicide awareness and prevention policy. It also directs the state Department of Education to develop a model policy to be made available to schools.
