CORBETT-CAWLEY CAMPAIGN PROVIDES SECRETARY TOM WOLF WITH NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION FOR WOLF TO PROVIDE DETAILS ON HIS INCOME TAX HIKE PROPOSAL

HARRISBURG, PA – The Corbett-Cawley campaign today supplied Secretary Tom Wolf with the documentation necessary to provide the specific details regarding his income tax proposal. Wolf recently stated in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he is “still working on the mathematics” of his income tax proposal because he didn’t know “what the different [tax] rates would provide, given the different levels of exemption.”

To assist Wolf with his mathematics, the Corbett-Cawley campaign mailed Wolf the most recent annual publication from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue that contains information on taxable income on personal tax returns filed with the Commonwealth. Wolf, despite his excuse that he cannot provide the details on his income tax proposal because he does not have the information necessary, actually authored a similar report to the one sent to him by the Corbett-Cawley campaign during his tenure as Governor Ed Rendell’s Secretary of Revenue. The Corbett-Cawley campaign sent Wolf a copy of the letter he signed in 2008.

Below is a copy of the letter to Secretary Tom Wolf from Corbett-Cawley Campaign Manager Mike Barley enclosed with the most recent personal income tax statistics report and Wolf’s 2008 letter. The entire contents mailed to Wolf can be downloaded by clicking HERE.

Dear Secretary Wolf:

I am writing today to provide you with the most up-to-date personal income tax statistics for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. You recently stated in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that you are “still working on the mathematics” of your income tax proposal because you do not have available to you “what the different [tax] rates would provide, given the different levels of exemption.”

As you should be aware based on your August 2008 correspondence from your time as Governor Ed Rendell’s Secretary of Revenue, this annual report contains “information on the taxable income” based on “income tax returns filed with the Commonwealth.” As you stated yourself, within the report, “amounts of taxable income by types of income are reported by county and also by total taxable income ranges.” I have enclosed a copy of your remarks for your review.

It is my hope in the interest of openness and transparency that you will now release the details of your income tax proposal and how much income taxes will rise to pay for the spending increases included in your “A Fresh Start!” platform, including:

  • Subsidizing interest on new student loans through PHEAA;
  • Increasing funding for DEP for improving oversight;
  • Increasing funding for local communities;
  • Increasing funding for education;
  • Increasing the state’s share of education funding to provide relief to local property taxpayers;
  • Increasing the investment in infrastructure;
  • Increasing the investment in in economic development;
  • Increasing the investment in renewable energy technology; and
  • Increasing the investment in energy efficiency retrofits of commercial and residential real estate.

I eagerly await the details of your income tax proposal now that you have access to the information necessary as it relates to your “working out the mathematics.”

Sincerely,

Michael Barley
Campaign Manager
Tom Corbett for Governor
