Marcellus fee nets $22M for Bradford, Tioga counties

"Bradford and Tioga Counties are set to receive a combined $22 million from Marcellus Shale production this year, but that reinvestment doesn't matter to millionaire Secretary Tom Wolf unless it's coming to Harrisburg's coffers where he could use it to placate his liberal, big government allies. Tax-and-spend is a bad habit Tom Wolf can't kick, and he's licking his chops at the thought of millions of more dollars in tax increases to spend on growing government, while taking valuable resources away from counties where drilling occurs." -- Campaign Manager Mike Barley

Marcellus fee nets $22M for Bradford, Tioga counties

Municipalities in Bradford and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania, as well as the counties themselves, will receive approximately $22.6 million in impact fees collected from natural gas drilling companies, according to a press release from state Rep. Matt Baker, R-Wellsboro.

Under the law, impact fees are imposed on the extraction of natural gas and the amount fluctuates depending on the price of natural gas and the rate of inflation, the release stated.

According to the figures provided this week by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, Bradford County municipalities will receive $3,748,241 and Tioga County municipalities will receive $7,482,060.

In addition, Bradford County will receive $7,054,000 and Tioga County will receive $4,404,637 from impact fee disbursements to local governments and funding from the Marcellus Legacy Fund, the release stated.

“Tioga and Bradford counties are among the counties with the most gas wells in the state and, therefore, receive some of the largest amounts back in impact fees,” Baker said in a statement.

“The money helps counties and local communities address any impacts from the industry, such as the repair of local roadways, environmental protections and affordable housing opportunities. The natural gas drilling industry has provided many benefits for the area, including increased local revenue and more job opportunities, but as with any industry, there are some resulting challenges that this money will help address.”

The Marcellus Legacy Fund is created from the 40 percent portion of fees collected that goes back to the state.
