Weight restrictions to be lifted on 100-plus bridges

More than 100 state and locally owned bridges will see weight restrictions lifted this year as PennDOT's bridge rehabilitation plan gets underway, state officials said Thursday.

Gov. Tom Corbett said more than 900 road and bridge projects will start in 2014, including the rehab of the Birmingham Bridge connecting the South Side and Oakland.

PennDOT officials plan to outline local projects at a news conference Thursday.

Corbett signed into law last year a $2.3 billion transportation funding bill that hikes vehicle-related fees and the wholesale gas tax to pay for fixing the state's aging roads and bridges.
