Corbett-Cawley Campaign Statement on ObamaCare Delay

Pushes “Lie of the Year” Beyond 2014 But Still Bad for Pennsylvanians

HARRISBURG, PA – With 250,000 Pennsylvanians already losing their health care as a result of ObamaCare, Corbett-Cawley Campaign Manager Mike Barley released the following statement on the news another major delay is coming for the law:

“ObamaCare continues to prove to be a disaster for Pennsylvania jobs and our economy, but the only people President Obama is willing to delay the law for are his Democratic allies. The 2013 ‘lie-of-the-year’ could cost as many as 250,000 Pennsylvanians their current coverage, while costing others their doctors, higher premiums and jobs, and a temporary delay won’t fix the healthcare problems facing the people of Pennsylvania.

“Congresswoman Schwartz, an author of the bill, and our opponents continue to support the president and this flawed ‘one-size-fits-all’ legislation over Pennsylvania families and small businesses, while Governor Corbett continues to fight for a Pennsylvania solution and common-sense reforms that provide greater access to quality and affordable healthcare to Pennsylvanians.”

Background:

Political Delays:

“The Obama administration is set to announce another major delay in implementing the Affordable Care Act, easing election pressure on Democrats. As early as this week, according to two sources, the White House will announce a new directive allowing insurers to continue offering health plans that do not meet ObamaCare’s minimum coverage requirements.” (Elise Viebeck, “New ObamaCare delay to help Democrats in midterm elections,” The Hill, 03/03/14)

“Prolonging the “keep your plan” fix will avoid another wave of health policy cancellations otherwise expected this fall. The cancellations would have created a firestorm for Democratic candidates in the last, crucial weeks before Election Day.” (Elise Viebeck, “New ObamaCare delay to help Democrats in midterm elections,” The Hill, 03/03/14)

“A one-year moratorium pushed the deadline beyond the midterm election, but insurers must send out cancellation notices 90 days in advance. That would mean notices in the mail by Oct. 1, five weeks before voters go to the polls. The administration’s decision to pursue another extension was confirmed by insurance sources who predicted a public announcement would be “imminent.”” (Elise Viebeck, “New ObamaCare delay to help Democrats in midterm elections,” The Hill, 03/03/14)

Unaffordable Care Act Costs 250,000 Pennsylvanians Their Plans:

“For many Pennsylvanians, the Affordable Care Act is proving to be anything but affordable. State regulators say that 250,000 Pennsylvanians are losing health coverage due to changes required by Obamacare. Many others are dealing with sticker shock from dramatic premium increases.” (John Finnerty, “As many as 250,000 Pennsylvanians could be losing health plans,” Meadville Tribune, 11/9/13)

Lie of the Year:

"If you like your health care plan, you can keep it," President Barack Obama said -- many times -- of his landmark new law…PolitiFact has named "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it," the Lie of the Year for 2013.” (Angie Drobnic Holan, “Lie of the Year: 'If you like your health care plan, you can keep it',” Politifact, 12/12/13)

Congresswoman Schwartz:

“If you already have health coverage you like, you can keep it.” (Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, “Affordable Care Act: Update,” Office of Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, Acc. 3/4/2014)
