Tom's busy campaign schedule has him on the road today in Pittsburgh. We start the day by unveiling Tom's Plan for Building a World Class Transportation Infrastructure at a Norfolk Southern rail yard. Pennsylvania currently has 121,000 miles of state and local highways, roads and bridges which is the fifth largest in the nation, we have the most railroads in the nation and rank fifth among states in the amount of rail miles within our border, not to mention our vast network of airports and water ports. So Tom knows that our transportation systems and infrastructure are vital to ensuring the growth of our economy in Pennsylvania and the quality of life of our residents. We have a strong history of leadership in transportation but as of late we have struggled to procure reliable and sustainable funding that will keep Pennsylvania open and running for our residents and visitors.
Tom believes we must continue to move goods friction free from Pennsylvania's centers of commerce to local and far away destinations, supporting the economic vitality of our urban centers and enhancing the character of all Pennsylvania's communities. Pennsylvanians themselves also need freedom of movement to get to work, to participate in volunteer commitments, and to get their children to school and activities ensuring an enhanced quality of life.
Today, Tom expressed his belief that safety, convenience and economic development must guide transportation policy decisions - doing what is in the best interest of all Pennsylvanians. The plan he unveiled today does exactly that.
Tom's transportation policy principles encompass many components including stabilizing reliable funding, maintaining our current vast infrastructure while supporting future enhancements, expanding Pennsylvania's many intermodal connections allowing freight and people to move seemlessly through various modes of transportation, maintaining and enhancing ridership opportunities for mass transit and supporting Pennsylvania's private transportation industry.
