In 1978, Republican nominee Richard Thornburgh, a crusading federal prosecutor from Pittsburgh, rode a reputation for putting corrupt politicians in prison to the governor's mansion, beating a Pittsburgh Democrat along the way.

Three decades later, GOP hopeful Tom Corbett, a former federal prosecutor in Pittsburgh, is relying on a reputation for sending corrupt lawmakers and aides to prison to follow in Thornburgh's footsteps. He, too, needs to defeat a Pittsburgh Democrat -- Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato.

For decades I’ve advised students to let the facts speak for themselves, while avoiding the indulgence of shouting at the facts. In other words, we should take in all the available, reliable information; process it; and let the emerging mosaic tell its story—whether the picture pleases or not. The human (and partisan) tendency to twist facts into pretzels in order to produce a desired result must be avoided at all costs.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Pennsylvania finds Republican Tom Corbett leading his Democratic challenger, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, 50% to 37%. Three percent (3%) of voters prefer some other candidate and 10% are undecided.

PALMYRA - Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett told employees of ASK Foods Friday  that the next governor "has to have the courage to make tough decisions." Cutting the size and scope of government won't be easy, Corbett said, and he suspects it might not make him popular, but it's necessary.

Corbett crammed several hours of handshakes and how-ya-doings into a busy afternoon at the Reading Terminal Market, a German festival in Northeast Philly and the annual fundraiser for the Republican City Committee. Corbett pounded away with a simple three-point platform each time he found a voter willing to hear his pitch: He wants to reduce the state budget, cut state taxes and create jobs.
