"I'm going to go into it dealing with them straight-up," Corbett says. "I'll say, 'Here's how I see it.' We'll listen to them, and hopefully we'll work through things to do what's in the best interest of Pennsylvanians."

But he's not taking the tough times lightly.

"You don't get into this race not knowing how very difficult it's going to be," Corbett says. "The challenges are tremendous, but they can be viewed as opportunities to make some change."

The Ed Rendell years were simply not good ones for Pennsylvania. Examples include:

• Spending has increased from $21 billion to $28 billion during his eight years in office.

• Unemployment in our region, which hovers near 10 percent, has not been higher since 1981.

• Rendell has proposed or raised more than 20 taxes on Pennsylvanians.

• “Pay to play” is a virtually established part of doing business and the Delaware River Port Authority is just one example. At the authority there are concerns of misappropriation of funds, no-bid contracts and nepotism.

• Pennsylvania ranks near the bottom among states in virtually every independent economic and job creation survey, including ranking 43rd in job growth and 48th in personal income growth.
