State Attorney General Tom Corbett ... beats his Democratic challengers in a new Research 2000 poll commissioned for the liberal bad news for Democrats -- a Quinnipiac University poll out earlier this month also showed Corbett at the top of the candidate pack.
But as was the case with the Quinnipiac poll, the new Daily Kos survey shows that all the gubernatorial aspirants have a long way to go before they seal the deal with voters.
In hypothetical head-to-heads, Corbett beats Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato 40-34 percent with 26 percent undecided; he prevails over Auditor General Jack Wagner 41-32 percent with 27 percent undecided; bestsMontgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel 41-31 percent with 28 percent undecided, and beats Sen. Anthony Williams of Philadelphia 47-19 percent with 34 percent undecided.
Nearly half of voters, 49 percent, say they don't know enough about Corbett to form an impression of him.
Things aren't much better on the Democratic side.
A clear majority of voters (53 percent) don't know enough about Onorato to form an opinion. Wagner and Hoeffel both come in with 56 percent of voters saying the same thing. And Williams, who has conducted such a stealthy campaign we sometimes forget he's running, is the biggest mystery, with 88 percent of voters saying they don't know enough about him.
The poll was conducted between Monday and Wednesday, sampling the opinions of 600 likely voters. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.
