Tom Corbett's Story

In 2008, Attorney General Tom Corbett was re-elected with more than three million votes, which is more votes than any Republican candidate in the history of Pennsylvania. On September 14, 2009, Tom Corbett announced his campaign for Governor and has received the endorsements of former Governors Richard Thornburgh, Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker because of his proven strength at the ballot box, his vision for Pennsylvania and his experience and accomplishments as a prosecutor, a soldier, business executive and small business owner.

Attorney General Corbett stated at his announcement:

"With a strong belief that we can and must do better... with a promise to every family in Pennsylvania that we will restore trust in Harrisburg... we will protect your hard-earned tax dollars and we will turn on the power of Pennsylvania’s economy, I announce my candidacy to become the next Governor of Pennsylvania."

As the next Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Corbett will reduce the tax burden on Pennsylvania families, harness our energy potential, offer our children a world class education and restart our economy, which will create family sustaining jobs. Tom Corbett believes that the next Governor must care more about the future of the Commonwealth and its residents and less about furthering political ambitions or self-enrichment. Tom Corbett will change the culture of Harrisburg. From eliminating WAMS and per diems to new budgeting practices and reducing the state vehicle fleet, Tom Corbett will provide open, transparent, accountable and trustworthy government.

Tom Corbett's accomplishments as Attorney General have brought him national recognition. Most notable are his efforts to protect our children from internet predators, our seniors from fraud and abuse, our communities from gangs and the violence associated with illegal drugs and the citizens of Pennsylvania from abuse of power and government corruption.

As Attorney General, Tom Corbett has worked hard to protect taxpayers’ hard earned money by going after predatory lenders, pharmaceutical companies and big oil companies that took advantage of consumers. In less than six years, the Office of Attorney General returned and saved Pennsylvania taxpayers over half a billion dollars.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Tom Corbett served his country as a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard 28th Infantry Division from 1971 until 1984, rising from private to captain.

Tom Corbett received his undergraduate degree from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania, and taught civics and history in Pine Grove Area High School in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. In 1975, he received his law degree from St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas.

Tom and his wife Susan reside in Shaler Township, Pennsylvania and are the proud parents of two children: Tom a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University, and Katherine, a prosecutor in the Philadelphia District Attorney's office.
