n the world of hardball politics, a sad but often true reality is that desperate candidates falling behind in the polls start to make deceptive statements about their opponent. They feel this is the only way they can catch up. And they hope the voters won’t learn the real truth until after Election Day.
Unfortunately, that is exactly what Sam Rohrer has decided to do. While this type of behavior may be expected from our Democratic opponents, it’s extremely disappointing that a fellow Republican has chosen this route.
Sam Rohrer has begun running an attack ad on the web that is carefully edited to play only a few words from a longer speech I gave regarding the importance of protecting the Constitution. This careful editing was used to twist and misrepresent the true meaning of my remarks. If my speech is reviewed in its entirety, it is clear that my message focused on the need for strict constructionist judges to protect the Constitution’s original intent.
Anyone who knows me well understands my reverence for this document. It is the foundation of our country, and must be respected and protected. In fact, it is so important to me that I have always carried a copy with me since my earliest days as an attorney.
To help you understand exactly what I said, and not fall prey to Rohrer’s intended deception, I would like to make clear the key points I have repeated over and over again.
-
I strongly support the idea of limited government and reducing government interference in our lives.
-
I strongly believe in the importance of the Constitution, and the need to protect and follow it.
-
I believe that despite attacks on this document, it has survived and is as relevant today as when our founding fathers had the vision to craft those words.
-
I believe that we must all be committed to do all we can to elect leaders and appoint strict constructionist judges who will protect the Constitution and uphold it. This is precisely why I was such a strong advocate for the nominations and confirmations of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito.
I continue to maintain that the Constitution must be strictly adhered to and protected. It is a position I have held for a long time – since before my days as a young attorney. It is for this reason that I have advocated the appointment of justices who have a record of judicial restraint and who understand the importance of not legislating from the bench.
My strong faith in the Constitution, and my strong belief that all laws must follow this document is what also led me to announce that I would be joining with other Attorneys General from around the country in a lawsuit to declare the recently passed healthcare bill as unconstitutional. As you can imagine, this action has not made me popular in all quarters. But my conviction that the Constitution must be upheld is so strong that I believe every piece of legislation, regardless of popularity or end result, must comply with this age tested document word for word. And my resolve to do so will not change based on anyone’s criticism.
I thank you for being an active voter and a concerned citizen, and seeking the truth about my real position. I also hope that now that my opponent has been exposed for his deception, you will be skeptical of any of his future desperate attacks.
